This June marks the 7th National Healthy Homes Month (NHHM), an annual effort by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other partners to educate the public about housing and its impact on health. This year’s theme is “A Healthy Home @ Any Age.”
NHHM is an opportunity to bring together individuals, community-based and nonprofit organizations, industry, governments (state, tribal and local), and others around two common goals:
- To increase awareness of housing related health and safety hazards, childhood lead poisoning prevention, and the overall principles of a healthy home, especially in low-income populations
- To encourage residents to take the actions necessary to make their homes safe and healthy
“Most people spend about 90% of their time indoors, with much of that time spent in the home,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This is why our homes need to provide a safe and healthy environment. Unfortunately, there are still countless homes with lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials. Others are exposed to elevated levels of mold, bacteria, radon, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, particulate matter (PM), and even carbon monoxide. These are all reasons why EMSL Analytical is an advocate for National Healthy Homes Month. For decades, EMSL’s laboratories, located across the United States and Canada, have been offering testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and home inspection tools to identify these types of hazards.”
