th, 2022
As recently as 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were 4,764 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States, with a worker dying every 111 minutes. BLS also recorded 2.7 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses with private employers. This number included 1,176,340 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work, with the median number of days at 12.
To address the importance of safety in the workplace, the National Safety Council established National Safety Month. The month-long observance has taken place each June since 1996 and has been designed as a time for organizations, companies, and individuals to increase awareness of workplace safety and health risks and to make efforts to reduce occupational injuries and deaths.
For 2022, weekly topics for National Safety Month include:
Week 1 – Musculoskeletal Disorders
Week 2 – Workplace Impairment
Week 3 – Injury Prevention
Week 4 – Slips, Trips and Falls
“Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), employers have a responsibility to provide a safe workplace,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This not only includes preventing accidents and injuries on the job, but also safeguarding against exposure to potentially hazardous substances that could cause injuries, illnesses, and deaths. At EMSL Analytical, we have laboratories across the United States and Canada that offer industrial hygiene and environmental testing services for chemical, microbial, and radiological hazards. We also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment (PPE), building inspection tools, and so much more to support the efforts of National Safety Month all year long.”
