A manufacturer of antimicrobial coatings wanted to determine whether their coating had residual activity over an extended period. EMSL Analytical Inc. was able to perform EPA's Interim Method for Evaluating the Efficacy of Antimicrobial Surface Coatings. This method consists of exposing the coating to chemical solutions and mechanical abrasions. This simulates typical washing and cleaning of the surface.
After simulating 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks of use the coating was tested to see if it was still effective at killing standard test bacteria. EMSL was able to determine for this project that the coating was effective for up to 2 weeks after application but not 3 weeks.
“EMSL’s Microbiology Department’s expert scientists are able to perform an array or special project testing,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Not only are our labs capable of analyzing common microbial issues, like mold or bacteria, but we are able to perform more in-depth projects for companies and individuals needing unique and custom testing services.”
