Title Children’s Hairclips Recalled Due to Lead Exposure Hazards
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides consumer product testing services for lead and other regulated substances to protect consumers and to help companies avoid costly product recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, November 17, 2022

Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of a brand of children’s bowtie hairclips that were manufactured in China and imported by a U.S. company. The hairclips were sold at discount stores nationwide from May 2019 through July of this year.

According to CPSC:

The crystals on the hairclip contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues.

The dangers of lead exposure are serious, and this is especially true for children as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Consumers are advised to immediately take the recalled hairclips away from children and to safely dispose of them.

“An item like a child’s hairclip can spread lead to their hands, or in many cases with young children, the hairclip could end up directly in their mouth,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This is why product regulations exist to protect children from lead and other heavy metal exposure risks. Unfortunately, in recent years, there have been a number of imported children’s products that have had to be recalled due to these types of exposure hazards.”

The consumer product testing specialists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. are dedicated to identifying heavy metal hazards and other exposure risks in all types of consumer goods. Product testing not only protects consumers, it is also essential for preventing these types of costly product recalls and the damaging public relations that are so often linked to these types of events. EMSL’s testing services are available to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies, healthcare professionals and the public.
