Title EMSL Senior Mycologist co-authors New Publication on Aspergillus
Introduction EMSL’s National Mycology Program Manager, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, has co-authored a new publication on the Taxonomy of Aspergillus series Versicolores.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, November 18, 2022

EMSL’s National Mycology Program Manager, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, has co-authored a new publication on the Taxonomy of Aspergillus series Versicolores: species reduction and lessons learned about intraspecific variability.

Aspergillus series Versicolores members occur in a wide range of environments and substrates such as indoor environments, food, clinical materials, soil, etc. The representatives of series Versicolores are the most common group of Aspergillus species found in indoor environments. The abundant presence of these species in indoor environments and bioaerosols increases their potential to pose health risks to humans. The spores of these species can cause allergies, aggravate asthma and they are associated with sick building syndrome. Almost all species can also produce mycotoxins, most notably sterigmatocystin, which is recognized as a potential carcinogen (class 2B - possible human carcinogen).

“We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic's work on increasing our knowledge of Aspergillus. This genus of fungi plays critical roles in indoor air quality, food safety, and human health,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic's impressive research will not only help EMSL’s clients, but the industry as a whole.”

The research article, Taxonomy of Aspergillus series Versicolores: species reduction and lessons learned about intraspecific variability, was published on November 16, 2022 in the journal, Studies in Mycology.  For further reading please check out the article at this link: https://www.studiesinmycology.org/sim/Sim102/Vol102Art2.pdf
