Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 17,000 imported finger skateboard ramp sets due to violations of the federal lead paint and lead content ban. Surface paint on the miniature skateboard and scooter toys in the ramp sets contain levels of lead that pose a risk of lead poisoning.
The products were made in China and imported by a company based in Florida. The toy sets were sold exclusively through two major online retailers from April of 2020 through May of this year. Consumers are advised to immediately take the miniature scooters and skateboards away from children and to dispose of them.
These toy sets were marketed to children 5+ years of age. It’s important that the recall instructions are followed as exposure to lead can affect nearly every system in the body. Small toys like these have a significant chance of ending up directly in the mouth of a child or lead could enter their body when they put their hands in their mouth after playing with the toys. Children are especially vulnerable to lead and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.
“There have been a significant number of imported products designed for children that have had to be recalled in 2022 due to lead exposure risks,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Both the United States and Canada have strict regulations to protect children from lead and other heavy metal exposure risks. Companies that violate these regulations put consumer at risk and these cases can be very costly for manufacturers, importers and distributors.”
Dedicated to helping companies avoid these types of situations are the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Analytical. EMSL has laboratories across the United States and Canada that offer material, surface and other consumer product testing services for regulated substances and other potential safety issues.
