Title Pennsauken Township Committee Address Cases of Legionnaires Disease
Introduction Legionnaires’ disease is spread via legionella bacteria through mist or within drinking water.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, January 16, 2023

In late December, Camden County announced that four cases of Legionnaires disease were found in Pennsauken Township.  While the township remains diligently testing the water supply, the tests have continuously come back negative.  These cases could be from outside the community.

EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s testing laboratories are the nation’s leading Legionella testing laboratories. We provide testing for your needs with an emphasis on potable water, cooling towers and buildings; from a single sample to thousands in volume, our labs can meet any need you may have related to Legionella.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia that can occur when people inhale water droplets or mists containing Legionella bacteria,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is found naturally in freshwater environments but can become a health concern if it grows and spreads in a building water system. Testing is the only way to know for sure if Legionella is present in a cooling tower or other source. At EMSL, we offer traditional culturing methods and advanced Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing methods. PCR tests are an excellent method for rapid results so mitigation can begin in a timely manner. Traditional culturing methods remain the gold standard, but results can take up to two weeks, therefore these two testing methods are often used together on a project. We also offer all the sampling supplies necessary.”

EMSL also offers a complimentary Legionella Pocket Guide. It provides an overview of Legionella, discusses sampling techniques, ways to test for it in the laboratory, and emergency remediation. To request a copy, please visit: http://emsl.com/Page.aspx?id=579.
