Denver, Colorado, January 23, 2023
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it approved Denver Water’s comprehensive approach for reducing lead in drinking water through the issuance of a final variance under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
According to the EPA news release:
The variance allows Denver Water to continue to implement a set of actions, called the Lead Reduction Program Plan, which work together to reduce lead in Denver’s drinking water. Denver Water is also receiving $76 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to accelerate the pace of the lead service line replacement actions specified in the plan.
As a result of EPA’s first-of-its-kind lead variance approval, Denver Water will continue to:
- Replace all lead service lines at no direct cost to customers
- Control lead corrosion with pH and alkalinity treatment
- Determine the locations of lead service lines that connect homes and buildings to water mains
- Provide a water pitcher filter certified to remove lead to customers with lead service lines
- Conduct extensive community outreach and education
“Removing lead service lines that can be a threat to people in towns and cities across the United States has been a major focus of public health advocates for years,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “While lead is rarely found in source water, it can enter the water supply as it comes in contact with plumbing materials that contain it. In most circumstances, lead enters tap water through the corrosion of these materials, which can include lead service lines.”
To help identify lead exposure risks across the United States and Canada, EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive testing services for it in water, air, dust, soil, paint, bulk materials and other types of samples. They also offer a Drinking Water Test Kit that monitors for lead, total coliform, E. coli, nitrate, nitrite, turbidity, iron, manganese and pH. EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/2kvtAcpw1MY
