Introduction EMSL Analytical provides industrial hygiene and environmental, health and safety (EHS) laboratory services, sampling supplies, monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment and other tools to help protect workers from exposure hazards.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, February 2, 2023

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries last month. The report covers data from 2021 and sadly shows a one-year increase in fatal work injuries of almost 9 percent.

There were 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2021, an 8.9-percent increase from the 4,764 in 2020. The fatal work injury rate was 3.6 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.4 per 100,000 FTE in 2020 and up from the 2019 pre-pandemic rate of 3.5.

Key findings from the 2021 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:

  • The 3.6 fatal occupational injury rate in 2021 represents the highest annual rate since 2016.
  • A worker died every 101 minutes from a work-related injury in 2021.
  • Exposure to harmful substances or environments led to 798 worker fatalities.

“The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), requires employers to provide a safe workplace,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This includes taking steps to help prevent accidents and injuries on the job, and also to safeguard employees from exposure to potentially hazardous substances that could cause injuries, illnesses and deaths.”

With industrial hygiene and EHS laboratories located across the United States and Canada, EMSL Analytical offers testing services for a wide range of chemical, microbial and radiological hazards. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment (PPE), inspection tools and more to help protect workers, the public and support health and safety programs at businesses and institutions across North America.
