Title Final EPA Pollution Standards Announced for Heavy-Duty Vehicles
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides air testing services and monitoring instruments to identify diesel exhaust, particulate matter and combustion gases to protect the public and workers, and to help keep companies in regulatory compliance.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, February 8, 2023

In December, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had finalized the strongest-ever national clean air standards to cut smog- and soot-forming emissions from heavy-duty trucks beginning with model year 2027. The new standards are reportedly more than 80% stronger than current standards.

EPA estimates that by 2045, the new standards will result in the following annual public health benefits:

  • Up to 2,900 fewer premature deaths
  • 6,700 fewer hospital admissions and emergency department visits
  • 18,000 fewer cases of childhood asthma
  • 1 million fewer cases of asthma symptoms and allergic rhinitis symptoms
  • 78,000 fewer lost days of work
  • 1 million fewer lost school days for children
  • $29 billion in annual net benefits

“The requirements in this new final rule are designed to lower emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOX), particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and air toxics,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EPA is also finalizing limited amendments to the regulations that implement air pollutant emission standards for other sectors, including light-duty vehicles, marine diesel engines, locomotives, and various other types of nonroad engines, vehicles and equipment.”

Offering testing services to detect and monitor for diesel exhaust, particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, and other gases and by-products associated with combustion engines are the air quality experts at EMSL Analytical. With laboratories across North America, their services help to safeguard the public, workers and the environment. These tests could also help companies avoid costly noncompliance penalties associated with clean air and exhaust regulations. Several years ago, EMSL even sponsored an educational video about diesel exhaust, particulate matter and air quality issues that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/mAjDvBwKFWE
