Cinnaminson, New Jersey, February 17, 2023
On February 3rd a train derailed in East Palestine Ohio carrying various hazardous materials. One of the main materials onboard and affected by the accident was vinyl chloride, a chemical utilized in the production of plastic products, and unfortunately associated with an increased risk of liver and other cancers. (A full list of other chemicals identified by the EPA involved in this spill can be viewed here.)
“For those concerned about exposure to vinyl chloride or other volatile organic compounds in the home or work environment, EMSL offers analytical testing and sampling supplies,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “We provide TO-15 analysis for vinyl chloride and other organics to determine contaminant levels in the air, and NIOSH analysis for worker exposure assessments. We also provide EPA methodologies for soil and water testing. If test results identify an exposure risk, corrective actions can then be implemented to prevent or mitigate these potential hazards.”
EMSL provides testing services for vinyl chloride and other organics in our Cinnaminson, NJ and Huntington Beach, CA (LA Testing) laboratories. EMSL analytical methodologies include: Air via EPA Method TO-15 or NIOSH 1007; Drinking Water by EPA Method 524.2; Wastewater by EPA Method 624.1/8260D; and Soil by EPA Method 8260D) – all utilizing Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
