Orlando, Florida, February 28, 2023
Earlier this month, local media in Orlando reported on dense clouds of smoke and ash in the area, including by the region’s famous theme parks. Several large prescribed burns, measuring in the thousands of acres, were taking place across Florida and were the likely cause of the smoke that made its way onto, and into, countless homes and buildings.
Unfortunately, some may have been damaged as the smoke, filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char, made its way indoors. Odors, discoloration and "ghosting" effects frequently occur inside a home or building due to contact with these substances. Their presence can also cause etching and corrosion over time, not to mention damage to sensitive electronics.
“Damage caused by smoke residues and odors can impact property values and create health concerns for building occupants, especially for those with respiratory issues,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The good news is smoke damage is covered by many property insurance policies, but it often requires proof of damages to successfully settle a claim. All too often, this is left to the property owner to prove. The scientists at EMSL Analytical, with a testing laboratory in Orlando and others across Florida, are experts at smoke damage, residue and odor testing. These services that analyze air and surface samples are available to assist property owners, tenants, environmental experts, and insurance companies and adjusters following any type of fire. We even offer an easy-to-use Fire & Smoke Damage Test Kit.”
EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about smoke damage to homes and buildings that can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/c0ksscTorHI
