Title Contractors Fined Over $1 Million for Asbestos Removal and Disposal Violations
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment to safeguard the public and to help companies comply with asbestos regulations during construction projects.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, March 14, 2023

Last month, contractors who took part in the removal and disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from a commercial property in Pennsylvania were ordered to pay over $1 million to the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) Clean Air Fund. The civil penalty was for alleged violations of ACHD Rules and Regulations concerning the removal and disposal of ACM.

Contractors involved with construction or demolition projects are required to follow regulations that mandate the safe handling and disposal of materials that contain asbestos. This is due to the fact that exposure to asbestos is a well-known health hazard that can cause mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Companies that fail to follow these rules are subject to costly fines and penalties.

“Investigations into alleged asbestos violations, like the case in Pennsylvania, happen quite often all across the country,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These investigations often result in costly penalties and legal fees. To help contractors and construction companies comply with health and safety regulations, EMSL’s network of laboratories in the United States and Canada have been providing asbestos testing services for over 40 years. In addition to laboratory services, EMSL offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment. These services and resources are instrumental in helping contractors identify asbestos-containing materials and for assessing air and dust samples to ensure asbestos hazards are not generated that could harm workers, the public or future building occupant. Testing is also important for helping companies with regulatory compliance issues to avoid fines and penalties.”
