Denver, Colorado, March 16, 2023
EPA announced the funds for Colorado as part of an allotment of $2 billion to states and territories that can be used to prioritize infrastructure and source water treatment for pollutants, like PFAS and other emerging contaminants, and to conduct water quality testing. These grants are to help protect the smallest and most vulnerable communities.
Perfluoroalkyl and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFNA, PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other ompounds. PFAS have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the globe, including in the United States since the 1940s. EMSL can analyze up to 18 different Perfluorinated compounds, including PFNA, PFOS, PFOA and GenX.
“According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), the potential for health effects from PFAS in humans is not well understood,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Some, but not all studies in humans with exposure have shown that certain PFAS may affect growth, learning and behavior of infants and older children; lower a woman’s chance of getting pregnant; interfere with the body’s natural hormones; increase cholesterol levels; affect the immune system; and increase the risk of cancer. Therefore, we now offer water testing for 18 of these chemicals and currently accept samples from over half the states in the country. Soon, EMSL will have even more PFAS testing options.”
EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about PFAS and potential exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/skLIprCGeX4.
