Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposal for the first-ever national drinking water standard for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The agency reports that this action is taking a major step towards protecting public health from PFAS pollution, complementing state efforts to limit PFAS by proposing to establish legally enforceable levels for six PFAS known to occur in drinking water.
The EPA proposal, if finalized, would regulate PFOA and PFOS as individual contaminants, and will regulate four other PFAS – PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and GenX Chemicals – as a mixture.
- PFOA and PFOS: EPA is proposing to regulate PFOA and PFOS at a level they can be reliably measured at 4 parts per trillion.
- PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and GenX Chemicals: EPA is proposing a regulation to limit any mixture containing one or more of PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and/or GenX Chemicals. For these PFAS, water systems would use an established approach called a hazard index calculation, defined in the proposed rule, to determine if the combinedlevels of these PFAS pose a potential risk.
“PFAS are man-made chemicals that have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years because many chemicals in this group do not readily break down in the environment and can build up in humans and animals,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The new proposed regulation would require public water systems to monitor for the six PFAS and it would also require systems to notify the public and reduce PFAS contamination if levels exceed the proposed regulatory standards.”
Certified and available to test for numerous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water samples from 40 states across the United States are the water quality experts at EMSL Analytical, Inc. Their PFAS testing services are available to water utilities, regulatory agencies, environmental professionals, manufacturers and the public. Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about PFAS and potential exposure risks that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/skLIprCGeX4
