Cinnaminson, New Jersey, May 2, 2023
Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW) takes place this year from May 1st through the 5th. This annual event has been recognized in the United States since 2007 and this year’s theme is Working Together for Clean Air.
The event is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and AirNow - the home of the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI). Other partners include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other federal, state and tribal agencies.
AQAW promotes actions to increase air quality awareness and encourages the public to take steps to improve the air they breathe. Specific topics for 2023 include:
- Monday – Wildfires and Smoke
- Tuesday – Asthma and Your Health
- Wednesday – Air Quality and Transportation
- Thursday – Air Quality and Climate
- Friday – Participatory Science
“Once again there are two topics that have been covered multiple times during Air Quality Awareness Week,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These are wildfires and smoke, and asthma and your health. Wildfire smoke exposure has become a major issue over large parts of the country as wildfire season has started earlier and lasted longer in many areas. With regards to asthma, some estimates put the number of people in the U.S. that suffer from the disease at 25 million, or about 1 in 13 people.”
The health effects from exposure to particulates in smoke can range from relatively minor (eye and respiratory tract irritation) to serious (exacerbation of asthma and heart failure, and premature death). Air pollution, especially ozone and particle pollution, is known to be capable of triggering asthma and worsening attacks. Outdoor air pollution can also increase sensitivity to other indoor pollutants and asthma triggers, like pet dander, mold and dust mites. This is why the industrial hygiene and environmental laboratories of EMSL Analytical offer indoor and outdoor air quality testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Last year, EMSL sponsored an educational video about Air Quality Awareness Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/XRzwmVzZspE
