Title CDC Warns Healthcare Facilities of an Emerging Fungus Considered an Urgent Antimicrobial Resistance Threat
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides environmental testing services to identify Candida auris, Clostridium difficile, MRSA and other superbugs to support infection control programs and protect patients.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, May 3, 2023

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a warning about Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent antimicrobial resistance (AR) threat. The agency announced it spread at an alarming rate in U.S. healthcare facilities in 2020-2021.

According to the CDC:

In general, C. auris is not a threat to healthy people.?People who are very sick, have invasive medical devices, or have long or frequent stays in healthcare facilities are at increased risk for acquiring C. auris. CDC has deemed C. auris as an urgent AR threat, because it is often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs, spreads easily in healthcare facilities, and can cause severe infections with high death rates.

“Clinical cases of C. auris were first reported in the United States in 2016,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Since then, cases have been rising rapidly and one of the reasons CDC believes this has happened is poor general infection prevention and control practices in some healthcare facilities.”

To support infection control programs, EMSL Analytical’s advanced laboratory testing services are available to assess the effectiveness of disinfection procedures and to help track down the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred. Their laboratories in the United States and Canada offer environmental testing services for C. auris, C. diff, MRSA and a wide range of other bacteria, fungi and viruses. These services help to protect patients, staff and control medical costs.

Last year, EMSL sponsored an educational video about C. auris that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/JGpL7VmKezg
