Cinnaminson, New Jersey, June 6, 2023
As recently as 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States, with a worker dying every 101 minutes. BLS also recorded 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses with private employers. This number included 1,062,700 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work.
To focus attention on the importance of occupational safety, the National Safety Council established National Safety Month in 1996. The month-long observance has taken place each June since then and has been designed as a time for organizations, companies and individuals to increase awareness of workplace safety and health risks and to make efforts to reduce occupational injuries, illnesses and deaths.
For 2023, weekly topics for National Safety Month include:
- Week 1 – Emergency Preparedness
- Week 2 – Slips, Trips and Falls
- Week 3 – Heat-Related Illness
- Week 4 – Hazard Recognition
“Employers have a responsibility to provide a safe workplace under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This means preventing accidents and injuries on the job, and also taking action to prevent occupational exposure to potentially hazardous substances that could cause harm. At EMSL Analytical, we support the efforts of National Safety Month. Our industrial hygiene and environmental, health and safety laboratories in the United States and Canada offer testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments, inspection tools and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks to chemical, microbial and radiological hazards.”
Last year, EMSL sponsored an educational video about National Safety Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/ygdLjYfG8z0
