Title 80,000 Children’s Fishing Rods Recalled Due to Potential Lead Hazards
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers product testing services for toys and other consumer goods to detect heavy metals and other regulated substances to protect consumers and help companies avoid costly product recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, June 14, 2023

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in conjunction with Health Canada, recently announced the recall of approximately 80,000 imported children’s fishing rods due to violations of the federal lead content ban. The ceramic guide at the top of the fishing rods contains lead above the allowable limit.

The fishing rods were made in China and imported by a company based in Missouri. The items were sold in specialty stores, sporting goods retailers and from online companies from January of 2021 through March of this year. Consumers are advised to immediately take the fishing rods away from children and to stop using them.

These products were marketed for use by children and it’s important that the recall instructions are followed as exposure to lead can affect nearly every system in the body. Children’s toys and goods have a significant chance of ending up directly in the mouth of a young child or lead could enter their body when they put their hands in their mouth after playing with the fishing rods. Children are especially vulnerable to lead and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.

“Both the United States and Canada have strict regulations to protect children from lead and other heavy metal exposure risks,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Companies that import, distribute and retail products that have not been properly tested could be at risk of violating regulations that limit how much lead or other regulated substances are allowed. They could also put consumers at risk and these types of recalls can be very costly. At EMSL Analytical, our consumer product testing specialists are dedicated to helping companies avoid these types of situations. With laboratories across the United States and Canada, we offer material, surface and other product testing services to identify regulated substances and other potential safety issues.”
