The Maryland Department of the Environment recently announced the agency, along with Maryland’s Attorney General, had filed a lawsuit involving work done on a television tower in Baltimore. The lawsuit, filed against the owner of the television tower and a tower painting company, alleges “violations of Maryland law that led to lead paint chips raining down on the surrounding communities.”
According to a Maryland Department of the Environment press release:
The complaint, filed today in Baltimore City Circuit Court, describes a project to remove lead paint from the iconic “candelabra” television tower that was carried out with little-to-no containment methods by an unaccredited contractor. The complaint describes the health hazards that lead paint exposure presents to young children, and it states: “Areas that paint scrapings were found include a child daycare center, a local playground and park, a college athletic field, and various residences as far as one-half mile away.”
“Lead-based paints and contaminated dusts are some of the most common sources of lead exposure for children and adults,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead poisoning can lead to developmental delays, learning difficulties, hearing loss, and numerous other serious issues. Fortunately, testing for lead can identify exposure risks so they can be properly removed or mitigation strategies can be put in place to protect people and the environment. These services can also be instrumental in helping to keep businesses and institutions in regulatory compliance with health and safety regulations.”
EMSL Analytical, with a lead testing laboratory in Maryland and dozens of other facilities across North America, offers comprehensive environmental, material, and industrial hygiene testing services for lead and many other regulated materials. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and a wide range of personal protective equipment.
