Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 346,000 double-walled stainless steel children’s cups because they contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban. The cups were imported from China by an importer based in Washington.
According to the product notice, the recall involves improperly manufactured 8 and 12 ounce models of the cups that were sold in pairs from online sources beginning in January of 2018 through March of this year. Both sizes of the recalled cups were sold in 12 different color combinations including a matching straw: blue and green, pink and purple, blue and gray, peach and teal, black and white, coral and yellow, green and pink, polignac and potpourri, brown and peach, rust and salmon, aqua and periwinkle, and cobalt and mint.
Consumers are advised to immediately take the cups away from children and to stop using them as lead is toxic if ingested and can cause various adverse health effects. Children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur. This could result in learning disorders, developmental defects and other long-term health problems.
“There have been numerous products imported from China in recent years that have been recalled in the United States and Canada due to elevated lead levels and other exposure concerns,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead is especially concerning when it involves products designed for children. This is why there are strict regulations and companies that violate these are putting consumers at risk. These cases can also be very costly for manufacturers, importers and distributors.”
Dedicated to helping companies avoid these types of situations are the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Analytical. They offer material, surface and other consumer product testing services for regulated substances and other potential safety issues.
