Title Students Start Classes in a Different School Following the Discovery of Asbestos Flooring
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks to asbestos-containing materials.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, September 15, 2023

Last month, it was reported that students and faculty at a middle school in Colorado would be starting the new school year at a different facility for the first semester. The change in school buildings was initiated after asbestos was discovered in the flooring during a multi-million dollar renovation.

Old flooring, including sheet vinyl, vinyl or asphalt floor tiles, and any associated paper-like backing, mastic, adhesive or glue, may contain asbestos. This is due to the fact that asbestos was once added to many different types of floor tiles and associated materials during the manufacturing process to increase the materials’ strength and durability. The only way to know if floor tiles, mastics or glues contain asbestos is to have them tested.

“While most flooring materials that contain asbestos are not a health risk when they are in good condition, as they age and become friable, or are disturbed, they could release asbestos fibers into the air,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Exposure to asbestos fibers over time can lead to mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Unfortunately, countless schools, commercial buildings and even homes across North America still have flooring materials that contain asbestos. This is why EMSL Analytical is dedicated to protecting students, families, workers and building occupants from this exposure hazard with material, environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. EMSL’s scientists, working out of asbestos testing laboratories across the United States and Canada, provide quick and affordable asbestos testing services for bulk materials and air, surface and dust samples. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and even personal protective equipment (PPE). These services safeguard people and help to keep companies and institutions in regulatory compliance.”
