Title New York Residents Assess Flood Damage and Emerging Mold Issues Following Heavy Rains
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, building inspection tools and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks to mold, asbestos, lead and other hazards following storm damage.

Long Island City, October 2, 2023

Last week, a state of emergency was declared by New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul for all of New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley Region due to heavy rains and flash flooding. A state of emergency was also declared in Hoboken, New Jersey. Up to eight inches of rain fell in some areas causing serious flood damage to the city’s subway system, basement apartments and to countless buildings.

Now that the water has receded, tenants and property owners are faced with cleaning up the mess and filing insurance claims. Mold and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues are now also a concern. This is due to the fact that standing water, humid conditions and wet building materials, furnishings and personal belongings can quickly become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Floodwaters can even introduce sewage and chemicals into homes and buildings. Some of these properties also likely contain asbestos and lead-based paints, two hazardous materials that can easily become airborne during cleanup, demolition or repair activities if the proper safety precautions are not in place.

“Fortunately, there are local resources for residents of New York and New Jersey impacted by flood damage,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical has testing laboratories in Long Island City, Carle Place and many other locations across New York and New Jersey to help flood victims with testing services, sampling supplies and test kits for mold, bacteria, sewage contamination, chemicals, lead-based paints, asbestos and other environmental, health and safety concerns associated. We also carry building inspection tools, such as moisture detection equipment, along with a full line of personal protective equipment (PPE).”

EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about flood cleanup and indoor environmental quality issues that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/3Q1tnHFkPF0
