Title New York Launches Educational Campaign on Childhood Lead Exposure
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead-based paints and other exposure hazards to protect the public and to help companies comply with health and safety regulations.

New York, New York, October 17, 2023

Last month, the New York State Department of Health launched a digital educational campaign aimed at raising awareness of childhood lead exposure. The campaign emphasizes ways to keep lead away from children and the importance of blood lead tests for children at 1 and 2 years of age.

According to the Department of Health announcement:

The Department's campaign reminds caregivers that all children must get a blood lead test at ages 1 and 2. Blood tests are the only sure way to know if a child has been exposed to lead. Additionally, at each well-child visit, health care providers should assess children six months to 6 years of age for risk of high lead exposure.

“Lead poisoning is considered to be an entirely preventable environmental disease, but even with this knowledge, there are many children that continue to be exposed to this toxic heavy metal,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead-based paints and dusts contaminated with lead are some of the most common sources of lead exposure for children. Exposure can also come from contaminated water, soil and other sources. This means there are still countless homes, apartments and other properties that contain lead-based paints and other exposure sources. Fortunately, testing for lead can quickly identify exposure risks in any type of property so the hazard can be removed or mitigated. Environmental testing safeguards children, families and workers, and it can also help to keep businesses and institutions in regulatory compliance.”

EMSL Analytical, with laboratories in New York and across North America, provides comprehensive environmental, material and industrial hygiene testing for lead and many other regulated substances. They also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE). Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about protecting children from lead poisoning that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LkEqFhNDS-U
