Title National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and Identifying Exposure Risks in the Built Environment
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides environmental, material and industrial hygiene testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to detect and mitigate exposure to lead and other hazardous substances.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, October 23, 2023

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is an annual call to bring together individuals, organizations, industry and government entities to reduce childhood exposure to lead by increasing lead poisoning prevention awareness. For 2023, NLPPW takes place from October 22nd through the 28th.

The week of recognition was created through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The theme for NLPPW 2023 is "Together, we can prevent lead exposure!" and the key messages are Get the Facts, Get Your Child Tested and Get Your Home Tested. This is important advice as an NLPPW document warns that about half of the homes built before 1978 have lead-based paint.

Lead is toxic for all people, but this is especially true for young children. According to the EPA, this is due to the fact that their growing bodies absorb more lead than adults do and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. Babies and young children can also be more highly exposed to lead because they often put their hands and other objects that can have lead from dust or soil on them into their mouths.

“Deteriorated lead-based paints continue to be one of the most common sources of exposure for children,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead dangers can also come from drinking water, contaminated soil and even from a child being exposed to lead dust from an adult’s job or hobby. Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable. This is why EMSL proudly supports the efforts of NLPPW with environmental, material and industrial hygiene testing services for lead and other heavy metals. Our laboratories, located across North America, also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and personal protective equipment.”

Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/YfaJoRrOpI4
