Cinnaminson, New Jersey, November 6, 2023 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition that makes it hard to breathe. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that nearly 16 million people in the United States have the condition. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims millions more have it, but have not yet been diagnosed and are not being treated. Common symptoms of COPD include: Frequent coughing or wheezing Excess phlegm, mucus or sputum production Shortness of breath Trouble taking a deep breath “To bring greater visibility and spur actions to help prevent the disease, November is recognized as National COPD Awareness Month,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “While it has long been known that smoking contributes to an individual’s chance of developing COPD, there are also other risks. CDC states that exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.
