Last month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the Capital Fund Housing-Related Hazards (HRH) & Lead-Based Paint (LBP) Capital Fund Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) awards. The NOFO provides a total of $157 million dollars, with 20 awards under Lead-Based Paint and 54 awards under Housing-Related Hazards. The purpose of the HRH and LBP Capital Funding is to provide funding to public housing agencies (PHAs) to evaluate and reduce residential health hazards in public housing.
HUD also shared that the funds would help get PHAs ready to comply with the national standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate (NSPIRE). NSPIRE improves HUD’s oversight by aligning and consolidating inspection regulations used to evaluate HUD housing across multiple programs. It strengthens HUD’s physical condition standards, and fire safety, carbon monoxide, mold and moisture, and lead-based paint standards that are enhanced with NSPIRE.
“This new funding is good news because lead poisoning is entirely preventable,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Tragically, countless families, including those with young children – the most vulnerable population, still live in homes with lead-based paints. To help identify and mitigate exposure risks to lead, asbestos, mold, radon and many other indoor pollutants, EMSL offers material, environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. Our laboratories also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment. These resources are available to families, landlords, property managers, environmental consultants and regulatory agencies.”
