The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that a property owner in Idaho agreed to pay a penalty of over $88,000 due to violations of the Clean Air Act related to the safe handling and disposal of asbestos.
According to the EPA, the property owner demolished a former retail building in Grand View, Idaho. After tearing down the building, the individual transported the debris, including approximately 10,000 square feet of asbestos-containing asphalt roofing, to his private property and burned it. The demolition project was subject to federal asbestos laws and EPA alleged the property owner failed to survey the site for asbestos and notify the agency before beginning demolition. It also alleged that work practice standards designed to protect against asbestos contamination and exposure during building demolition and waste disposal were not followed.
“Whenever asbestos regulations are not adhered to, both workers and the public could be at risk,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. This is why the laboratories of EMSL Analytical are dedicated to helping property owners, companies, contractors, property managers, real estate developers and environmental professionals test for asbestos for over 40 years. Our laboratories, located across the United States and Canada, not only work to protect workers and the public, they can also be instrumental for keeping companies and individuals in compliance with asbestos regulations.”
