Indianapolis, Indiana, January 5, 2024
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that a plant-based ingredient maker had agreed to a settlement with EPA and the U.S. Department of Justice, along with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, to settle claims that it violated the Clean Air Act (CAA) at its wet milling facility in Indiana.
The company will pay a civil penalty of $1,139,600 and implement measures at a cost of nearly $7 million to reduce and offset unpermitted emissions of particulate matter (PM) and to comply with lower future PM limits. A complaint filed with the consent decree states that the business violated CAA permit limits on PM emissions, including inhalable PMs with a diameter of 10 microns or less, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
“Particulate matter can pose a significant threat to anyone’s health because they are small enough to be carried by the air and travel deep into the lungs,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It can be an exposure risk in both indoor and outdoor environments where it can cause a number of health concerns. This is why the industrial hygiene and environmental scientists at EMSL are dedicated to identifying particulate matter, VOCs and other airborne exposure risks. We have laboratories located across North America that provide air testing services, sampling supplies and the industry’s leading particle counters. These resources protect people and help to keep companies in compliance with health and safety regulations.”
EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about particulate matter and indoor air quality that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/_7n6l6oQUqQ
