Cinnaminson, New Jersey, January 26, 2024
Just a few days before Christmas, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 205,000 playsets and toys due to violations of federal phthalate and lead content bans. The children’s products, imported from China by multiple importers, were distributed online and through retail stores from July of 2021 through April of 2023.
According to the recall notice:
Lead and phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.
“While exposure to elevated levels of lead or phthalates isn’t good for anyone, protecting children from these substances is especially important,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The health effects of various phthalate exposures are not completely understood, but some are strongly suspected to be endocrine disruptors. Federal regulations restrict their use in certain child care articles and toys since children can easily be exposed to these chemicals by handling and chewing on items that contain them. Exposure to lead can cause lead poisoning and a whole host of devastating side effects in children.”
Dedicated to helping manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulatory agencies and health advocates from across North America test for phthalates, lead and other regulated substances are the scientists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. Their product testing services protect consumers and can also be essential for helping companies comply with health and safety regulations to avoid these types of costly product recalls.
