Last month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. The report covers data from 2022 and sadly shows a one-year increase in fatal work injuries of 5.7 percent.
There were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022, an increase from the 5,190 in 2021. The fatal work injury rate was 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.6 per 100,000 FTE in 2021.
Key findings from the 2022 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:
- A worker died every 96 minutes from a work-related injury in 2022 compared to 101 minutes in 2021.
- Exposure to harmful substances or environments increased 5.1 percent in 2022 and led to 839 worker fatalities.
“Employers are required by law to provide a safe workplace for all their workers,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These tragic figures for fatal occupational injuries do not include the millions of workers that develop workplace injuries and illnesses each year. Employers must take steps to do all they can to prevent accidents, illnesses, injuries and deaths, this includes safeguarding employees from exposure to potentially hazardous substances.”
