The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of over 12,000 children’s silver tiaras with red rhinestones. The tiaras were manufactured in China and sold through a major online retailer from January of 2021 through November of last year.

According to the CPSC recall notice:

The rhinestones embedded in the recalled tiaras contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Young children tend to put their hands in their mouth after touching things, such as a toy, or simply put an object directly into their mouth. Unfortunately, lead levels can build up in the body over time so it’s important that children and adults are not exposed to this toxic metal. Due to these facts, consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled tiaras.
