Workers Memorial Day is observed each year on the 28th of April, the same day that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established back in 1971. It is a time to honor those workers who have died on the job and to focus on creating safe and healthful workplaces for all workers.
Protecting the health and safety of workers is indeed a critical function as there were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022, an increase from the 5,190 in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS also reports that private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5% from 2021.
“Sadly, these figures show both fatal work injuries, and nonfatal injuries and illnesses, on the increase,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These numbers are a vivid reminder that industrial hygiene and environmental, health and safety programs are crucial for protecting workers. At EMSL Analytical, we are proud to support the industrial hygiene community and the efforts of Workers Memorial Day. For more than four decades, EMSL has been offering laboratory testing services and resources. These include monitoring instruments, inspection tools and personal protective equipment. In addition to creating safer work environments, these testing services and resources are also instrumental in keeping companies and institutions in compliance with OSHA standards.”
Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about Workers Memorial Day that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/ksB6drQOY88
