Title Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and Helping Building Occupants Breathe Better
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers air quality testing services, sampling supplies, test kits and air monitoring instruments to identify asthma triggers and other airborne pollutants in the built environment.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, May 9, 2024

May is recognized as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, and this year, May 7th is recognized as World Asthma Day. The month is dedicated to increasing awareness about the disease and how asthmatics can manage their condition by preventing or mitigating exposure to known environmental asthma triggers, allergens, and respiratory irritants.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Asthma is a disease that affects your lungs. It causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and nighttime or early morning coughing. Asthma can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack. You must also remove the triggers in your environment that can make your asthma worse.

“There are a number of common allergens and respiratory irritants that can act as asthma triggers,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These vary from person to person, but some of the most common ones include tobacco smoke; dust mites; outdoor air pollution; chemical irritants; cockroach, cat and dog allergens; mold; nitrogen dioxide; and smoke from burning wood or grass.”

Identifying the presence of these and others airborne pollutants in an asthmatic’s home, school, or work environment can be significant because the information allows them to take precautions to prevent future asthma attacks. Helping in this effort are the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) experts at EMSL Analytical. With laboratories across North America, they offer IEQ testing services for a wide range of environmental asthma triggers, allergens, respiratory irritants, and other airborne pollutants. EMSL also provides sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and air monitoring instruments.

Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about Asthma Awareness Month and World Asthma Day that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/37Ss6i9ohtM
