Clean Air Month takes place each May and is meant to be a time to educate the public about the connection between clean air, both outdoors and indoors, and respiratory health. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to clean air.
The quality of the outdoor air people breathe is dependent upon where they live, limiting their ability to avoid certain pollutants when outside. The air quality inside of homes, schools, and businesses, where most people spend approximately 90% of their time, can usually be more easily controlled.
Some of the common pollutants that impact indoor air quality (IAQ) include things like radon, mold, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, cockroach allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, tobacco smoke, particulate matter (PM), asbestos, lead, pesticides, cleaning chemicals and sewer gas. Breathing elevated levels of these and many other airborne pollutants can potentially have an impact on one’s health and well-being.
“The good news is there are ways to test for indoor pollutants so that steps can be taken to eliminate or mitigate any exposure risks found,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL Analytical, we offer quick and affordable indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and even respirators and other personal protective equipment. These resources can be essential for assessing, controlling, and optimizing indoor conditions.”
EMSL sponsored an educational video about Clean Air Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/mw1HtEJqVyU
