Charlotte, North Carolina, May 23, 2024
Recently, multiple media outlets reported on a police department in North Carolina that will soon be moving into a temporary office and out of the basement at city hall. Once the move occurs, city officials plan on resolving air quality issues in the current location due to concerns over mold, moisture and musty odors.
Anytime there are indoor humidity issues, flooding events or water leaks it can lead to the growth of mold. Mold multiplies by producing microscopic spores that are so small they easily float through the air. At elevated levels, these can be a respiratory concern. Allergic reactions are quite common and can be immediate or delayed, and may include hay fever-like symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. Mold can even cause asthma attacks in people with the condition who are allergic to mold. In addition, exposure to mold can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of individuals whether or not they are allergic to it.
“Fortunately, the mold and moisture issues in this case have been recognized so corrective actions can take place as the officers and department workers are placed in a new location,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we have multiple laboratories in North Carolina and dozens more across the rest of the United States and Canada that can help in these types of situations. Our laboratories provide air and indoor environmental quality testing for everything from mold and bacteria to allergens, particulate matter, lead, asbestos, radon and more. EMSL also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment and building inspection tools to identify mold and other exposure concerns.”
