Title Backyard Poultry Warning from CDC as Salmonella Outbreaks Sicken Over 100 People
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers environmental and food testing services to detect Salmonella, E. coli and other microbial pathogens to help protect families and workers from contact with a wide range of exposure risks.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, June 17, 2024

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted a media alert about Salmonella infections in at least 29 states. The agency is actively investigating multiple outbreaks that are linked with contact with backyard poultry. In total, 109 illnesses have been reported. This number includes 33 hospitalizations. 43% of the people infected have been children younger than 5. The likely total number of sick individuals is suspected to be much higher than what has been reported to the agency.

Backyard poultry can carry Salmonella, a type of bacteria that naturally lives in the intestines of many animals, even if they look healthy. Salmonella can be carried in the droppings and on the bodies of live poultry so it is sometimes found on cages, coops, feed and water dishes, hay, plants and soil. The bacteria can also get on people’s hands, shoes and clothing if they handle the birds or if children play where they live and roam.

“Tragically, CDC estimates 420 deaths occur due to non-typhoidal Salmonella and over a million infections take place in the United States each year,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “With regards to backyard poultry, CDC releases a media alert and reports on Salmonella outbreaks most years. To help prevent infections in poultry workers and families that have backyard flocks, or to identify the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred, EMSL Analytical offers environmental and food testing for Salmonella and many other microbial pathogens.”

EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about backyard poultry and Salmonella exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/fQmOd_B_P68
