Title Legionella Testing Opportunities and Resources for Home Inspectors
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers easy-to-use test kits for home inspectors and environmental consultants to analyze water samples for Legionella, the microbial pathogen that causes Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever, to protect vulnerable populations.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, July 30, 2024

Since the early 2000s, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that cases of Legionnaires' disease have been increasing. Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria known as Legionella that can cause death due to complications from the illness in about 1 out of every 10 people that become infected.

Legionella becomes a health concern when it grows and spreads in human-made building water systems. This includes in people’s homes and condos since most infections are due to the inhalation of water droplets or mists that contain the bacteria. Common sources of aerosolized water droplets in residential properties include showers, hot tubs, faucets, misters, and decorative fountains.

The New Jersey Department of Health has even published a brochure about Legionnaires’ disease and household water. Some of the additional places where it can grow listed by the agency include water heaters, water filters, hoses, pipes, and respiratory equipment.

“As the number of annual cases of Legionnaires’ disease increase, there is a growing demand for Legionella testing services in not just commercial and institutional properties,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Proactively testing in the residential market is also on the rise and home inspectors are uniquely positioned to offer this service. EMSL has made taking a sample and getting the results a smooth and simple process with our easy-to-use Legionella Test Kit. This test can seamlessly be added to the list of services most home inspectors already offer.”
