Scientists in Texas have recently uncovered that pipes made with asbestos are still in use throughout San Antonio and its surrounding areas.
San Antonio Water System’s map of the city’s SAWS pipes shows that 27 percent of the pipes contain asbestos cement. Those pipes account for more than two thousand miles of pipe.
As underground water pipes age, main breaks are bound to happen. When those pipes burst, asbestos exposure risk is at a danger point. Asbestos exposure can cause cancer when inhaled into the lungs. The concern also lies within the crew members who must repair the aging asbestos-containing pipes.
“For those in San Antonio, it is extremely important to know the dangers of asbestos in Drinking Water” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical. “Although most of the country moved away from asbestos-containing-material before the year 2000, the older building materials commonly contain asbestos to help with waterproofing and insulation. When older pipes buried in the 1950s and 1960s are disturbed from main breaks or water erosion, that’s when it becomes potentially dangerous for citizens. To assist with identifying asbestos in drinking water or building materials, EMSL’s network of laboratories offer Asbestos Testing utilizing various methods and matrices”.
