Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had reached a settlement with a Connecticut-based carpentry and renovation company for alleged violations of the federal Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. As a result of the settlement, the business has agreed to pay a penalty of over $39,000 and certify compliance with the RRP Rule.
According to the agency, following an anonymous complaint, EPA conducted an inspection of the business at an active home renovation site in Mystic, Connecticut for alleged violations. The project included the removal of exterior painted components and installation of new siding and gutters. The RRP Rule applies to housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978, when lead-based paint was banned. A child under the age of six was residing at the property in Mystic.
“Contractors and renovation companies need to be aware that there have been a number of cases brought against businesses by EPA in recent years due to lead issues,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “To help businesses comply with the RRP Rule and other regulations, EMSL Analytical has a lead testing laboratory in Connecticut and dozens more across North America. We provide environmental, material, and industrial hygiene testing services for lead, asbestos, PCBs, and numerous other substances. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment.
