In 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) first designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). NPM is intended to educate and encourage people from across the United States to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions, and communities. 

Disaster preparedness includes being ready for a wide range of possible events. Depending on where one lives, these could include natural events such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.
