Cinnaminson, New Jersey, September 19, 2024
The third week of September has been recognized as National Farm Safety and Health Week since 1944. It is timely as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports the fall harvest season is not only one of the busiest times for the nation’s farmers and farm workers, but also one of the most dangerous.
The National Safety Council was the first to promote the week of recognition and it is now led by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS). The theme for 2024 is Don’t Learn Safety by Accident. Each weekday, from September 15th through the 21st, has a focus. For this year, they include:
- Equipment and Rural Roadway Safety – Monday
- Health and Wellness - Tuesday
- Generations of Farming - Wednesday
- Confined Spaces - Thursday
- Reporting Ag Injuries - Friday
“There are millions of people employed on farms and ranches all across this country,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that in 2021, there were 453 fatalities in the agricultural sector. This makes farming one of the more dangerous occupations in the nation. In addition to fatal accidents and serious injuries, farmers and agricultural workers can be at risk of exposure to a number of airborne hazards. These include everything from mold, bacteria, and viruses, to dusts - including combustible dusts, fumes, insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants, and fertilizers to name just a few. Exposure to hazardous gases can also be a serious risk, including elevated concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and other gases.”
Dedicated to protecting ranchers, farmers, and agricultural workers are the environmental and industrial hygiene experts at EMSL Analytical, Inc. With laboratories across North America, they offer testing for mold, bacteria, viruses, particulates, gases, combustible dusts, and a wide range of pesticides. EMSL also provide a complete line of air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators. They even sponsored an educational video about National Farm Safety and Health Week several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/Pwp9S-LuTqg
