Title CDC Announces More Deaths and Illnesses Linked to Recalled Deli Meats
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides food testing services to identify Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella, and many other foodborne pathogens to protect consumers and to help prevent costly food recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, October 1, 2024

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently declared additional cases, hospitalizations, and deaths associated with an outbreak of Listeria linked to a brand of liverwurst. The liverwurst, and other deli meats, have been part of a nationwide recall of over 200,000 pounds of various products.

According to the CDC, epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data show that meats sliced at delis, including the liverwurst, are contaminated with Listeria and are making people sick. The agency goes to warn that products sold at the deli, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria. The bacteria spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food. They also caution that refrigeration does not kill Listeria, but reheating to a high enough temperature before eating will kill any germs that may be on these meats.

“As of late August, there were at least 57 hospitalizations and 9 deaths that are known to have occurred in 18 states,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “CDC claims this is the largest Listeria outbreak since 2011. At EMSL, we have dedicated food scientists available to help companies prevent contaminated foods from reaching the public, not to mention the costly product recalls associated with these types of events.”

With dozens of laboratories across North America, EMSL offers microbial and chemical testing of raw ingredients, production surfaces, and final products to identify Listeria, and other foodborne pathogens and contaminants. These services are also instrumental for evaluating the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures at food processing and handling facilities.
