Children’s Health Month takes place each October. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) utilizes this time to spread awareness on the importance of protecting children from common environmental hazards they could be exposed to where they live, play, and learn.
From their earliest stages of development through puberty, children are especially vulnerable to exposure to environmental contaminants. They are particularly vulnerable because their bodies are small and still developing, so they ingest and absorb more chemicals. Children’s age-appropriate behavior may also expose them to potential hazards, for example, crawling and playing on the floor or in a yard may expose them to harmful contaminants. They also tend to put unsafe items in their mouths, such as paint chips that may contain lead.
“EMSL proudly supports the efforts of Children’s Health Month through outdoor and indoor environmental quality testing services for mold, bacteria, viruses, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds, pesticides, radon, and many other common exposure hazards,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “With testing laboratories located across North America, EMSL also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to help assess exposure risks in homes, schools, daycare centers, and playgrounds.”
EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month and potential environmental hazards that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
