National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is an annual event designed to bring together individuals, organizations, industry, and government entities to reduce childhood exposure to lead by increasing lead poisoning prevention awareness. For 2024, NLPPW takes place from October 20^th through the 26^th.

The week of recognition was created through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The theme for NLPPW 2024 is "Bright futures begin lead-free” and the key messages are Get the Facts, Get Your Child Tested, and Get Your Home Tested.

Lead is toxic for all people, but this is especially true for young children. Unfortunately, according to the EPA, approximately three million American households with children under six years old have lead exposure hazards.

“Lead-based paints continue to be one of the most common sources of exposure for children,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “However, lead exposure risks can also come from contaminated drinking water, foods, soil, and other sources. The good news is lead poisoning is entirely preventable.”
