National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month takes place each October. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refers to indoor air quality (IAQ) as the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.
A comfortable temperature and relative humidity, good ventilation, and a lack of unpleasant odors comes to mind for many people when thinking about IAQ. Also important is understanding and controlling airborne pollutants found indoors to help reduce the risk of potential health concerns. EPA warns that the health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later. These health effects could include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; headaches, dizziness, and fatigue; and even respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer.
“Some of the more common IAQ pollutants include mold, pollen, particulate matter, animal dander, bacteria, viruses, radon, volatile organic compounds, pesticides, lead, asbestos, carbon monoxide, and tobacco and marijuana smoke,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “With laboratories across North America, EMSL supports the efforts of National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month with testing services for a wide range of microbial, chemical, and radiological exposure risks. We also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, and air monitoring instruments. All of these resources can be utilized to optimize indoor conditions in our homes, schools, and businesses.”
Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/RbLmbmixmOU
