Title Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Exposure Risks to Airborne Carcinogens
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate contact with carcinogens, respiratory irritants, allergens, and asthma triggers in the environment.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, November 5, 2024

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States. About 197,000 people in this country are told they have lung cancer annually, tragically, close to 136,000 die from this disease each year.

To spread information about lung cancer and the many things people can do to lessen their chances of developing it, the month of November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. For example, it has long been accepted that one of most important things most people can do is to not smoke. However, smoking and secondhand smoke are not the only risks. Lung cancer can also be the result of having a family history of it or being exposed to various substances. These include asbestos, radon, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium. These exposures could happen at home, work, or both.

“What we breathe and come in contact with in our homes, schools, and work environments has a direct impact on our well-being,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Unfortunately, there are airborne hazards in far too many indoor environments that could cause a variety of respiratory conditions, including lung cancer. EMSL Analytical is proud to support the efforts of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. We encourages people to learn more about airborne pollutants, respiratory health, and testing indoor environments for exposure risks.”

To help in this process, EMSL’s laboratories located across North America provide an array of environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. They also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Several years ago, they even sponsored an educational video about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LV7zwQiwaCQ
