The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of thousands of children’s sipper cups shaped like bowling pins. The red tape on the outside of the bowling pin cups contains levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban.
The cups were manufactured in China and sold at bowling alleys in the United States from January 2018 through July 2019. Consumers are advised to immediately take the cups away from children and to stop using them as lead is toxic if ingested.
“If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This could result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems. These are all reasons why there are strict product regulations for lead and various other heavy metals. Companies that violate these rules are putting consumers at risk, and these scenarios can be very costly for manufacturers, importers, and distributors.”
Dedicated to helping businesses protect consumers, and avoid product recalls and the litigation that often comes with these types of events, are the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Analytical. They offer material and product testing services for regulated substances and a wide range of other potential health and safety issues.
