Title NIOSH Report Focuses on Mold and Moisture Concerns at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to help identify mold contamination and moisture issues in the built environment.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, July 30, 2025

Last month, Military.com announced that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) had released a report covering indoor mold and moisture exposure concerns at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. According to the report, from at least 2011 through 2022, persistent mold problems caused health issues for cadets and employees.

Exposure to elevated levels of mold in the built environment can indeed cause allergies and trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition. Even for those who are not allergic, high levels of mold in the air can act as a respiratory irritant. For anyone with a weakened immune system, exposure to some types of fungi associated with water-damaged buildings, such as Aspergillus, could even result in an infection in rare cases.

“Over the last decade, there have been a number of high-profile mold and moisture issues at military installations and with private military housing providers,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Unfortunately, mold will grow on virtually any organic substance if enough moisture is present, and most buildings are full of organic materials. These include building materials, furnishings, and even personal belongings. This is why responding to indoor moisture problems in a timely manner is so imperative to prevent mold from becoming a significant indoor environmental quality concern.”

EMSL Analytical, with a laboratory in Connecticut and dozens more across North America, offers testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to help identify mold, moisture, and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues.
