Title Fire Station in Texas Temporarily Closed Due to Mold Exposure Concerns
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, building inspection tools, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks in the built environment.

Dallas, Texas, August 22, 2025

Last month, the City of Temple in Texas announced that crews from one of their fire stations would be temporarily relocated due to a facility maintenance issue. A day later, multiple media outlets reported the facility maintenance issue revolved around concerns that firefighters were being exposed to mold in the fire station.

Mold can begin to grow indoors anytime there is flooding, a water leak, faulty plumbing, or humidity issues that are not quickly addressed. Mold multiplies by producing microscopic spores that can easily become airborne, and at elevated concentrations, this can cause respiratory concerns. Allergic reactions to mold are quite common and can be immediate or delayed. Allergic responses include hay fever-like symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. Mold can even trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition.

In addition, exposure to mold can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of individuals whether or not they are allergic to it. There are even some types of mold associated with water-damaged buildings that can cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened immune system.

“If you spend up to 24 hours a day in a structure, like many firefighters do during their long shifts, exposure to mold or other indoor environmental quality issues can be a significant concern,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “With multiple laboratories in Texas, and dozens more across North America, EMSL Analytical can help in these types of situations. We provide environmental testing for mold, bacteria, lead, asbestos, and other respiratory exposure issues. EMSL also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure to a wide range of airborne contaminants.”
